HOWARD BACH AND TONY
GUNAWAN Howard Bach and Tony Gunawan made history for U.S. badminton when they became the first Americans to medal at the World Badminton Championships in 2005. Held at the Anaheim Pond Arena, Bach and Gunawan were the 13th seeds. In the quarterfinals, they upset the top-seeded Danish team of Jans Eriksen and Martin Hansen. In the semi-finals they defeated the Indonesian team of Luluk Hadiyanto and Yulianto Alven, who had been ranked #1 in the world earlier in the year. Bach and Gunawan faced off against the #2 seeds in the final, Chandra Wijaya and Sigit Budiarto, and won 15-11 10-15 15-11. |
