NBL
Middle School League
How the
NBL Middle School League works
Team leaders for middle school
teams (athletic director, coach, teacher, parent, etc.) must
register the team by mailing
the middle school team registration form. A minimum of
two boys and two girls are required for a team; there is no
maximum. Once the registration form is received, the NBL will post the team's contact information on the
NBL Middle
School Team Locator page.
Teams will do their own
scheduling and may play any number of matches during the
season. There is also a
NBL Middle School League
Facebook fan page which will allow teams to communicate with each
other and schedule matches.
Home team will email results to the NBL.
Rankings by state/province will be based on win-loss record.
The top eight teams in each state/province will qualify for
the State/Province Playoffs . Winning teams from
State/Province Playoffs will
qualify for Regional Playoffs, and
regional winners will advance to the national NBL Championships.
Eligibility
The NBL Middle School League is open to students age 14 and
under. Players who turn 15 years of age during the
season may play until their 15th birthday.
Formats
Teams may choose any of the following formats. Teams
must agree at the time of scheduling which format will be
used:
-
Five-Match Format:
Five matches will be played: boy's singles, boy's doubles,
girl's singles, girl's doubles, and mixed doubles. Each
match won is a point in a team's score. Use
Five-Match Scoresheet for this format.
Note: If teams are participating in another league that
plays more than five matches, they may agree
beforehand which matches will be designated to count toward
the NBL score.
-
Ten-Game Format:
Ten games will be played:
two games each in boy's singles, boy's doubles,
girl's singles, girl's doubles, and mixed doubles.
Home team will
determine the order of games played. Each game is rally scoring to
15;
each game won counts as a point in a team's total score.
If the team score is tied at 5-5, a final game of mixed
doubles will be played to break the tie. Players are allowed to play singles
and doubles. Teams
must exchange scoresheets before match.

scoring. Use Ten-Game Scoresheet for this format.
-
NBL 4-17 Format:
A minimum of nine games will be played: two
game each in boy's singles, boy's doubles,
girl's singles, girl's doubles, and at least one game in
mixed doubles. Each game won is a point in a team's
total score. At the end of nine games, if the trailing
team won the mixed doubles game, the match will enter
Overtime. Mixed doubles play continues until the
leading team wins one game (which concludes the match), or
the trailing team ties the score. If the trailing team
ties the score, a final mixed doubles Tiebreak will decide
the match. All games (with the exception of Tiebreak)
are rally scoring to 17.

Official Shuttle
The official shuttle of the NBL Middle School League will be
announced on October 1, 2009. All league matches,
State/Province Playoffs, Regional Playoffs and NBL
Championships will use the official shuttle. To keep
league costs down, a synthetic shuttle will be the official
shuttle of the NBL Middle School League. Teams will
receive special pricing on official shuttles from Badminton
Warehouse.
Tournament Progression
The top eight-ranked teams in each
state/province will receive automatic berths in their
respective State/Province Playoffs (of those teams that
played a minimum of three matches against other NBL member
teams by April 30). State/Province winners will
qualify for Regional Playoffs, and regional winners will
qualify for the NBL Championships.
Note: If there is only one team in a state
or province, that team will automatically qualify for the
NBL Regional Playoffs and will not be subject to the
three-match minimum. If there is only one team in a region,
that team will automatically qualify for the NBL
Championships.
