Indiana University defends title
(April 17, 2005 - Rensselaer, Ind.) - Indiana University successfully defended its Great Lakes Campus Invitational title on April 17, 2005 with an undefeated 3-0 win-loss record in the event's round-robin format. The Great Lakes Campus Invitational, an annual event since 1998, was held at Saint Joseph's College and also included teams Michigan State University, Eastern Illinois University, and the University of Chicago. The NBL format takes the sport of badminton, traditionally an individual sport, and lets men and women compete in a co-recreational team format that includes innovative and fast-paced scoring. Multiple games are played in men's singles, men's doubles, women's singles, women's doubles and mixed doubles. Each game won is a point in the total team score, and inkeeping with the co-recreational emphasis of the NBL format, mixed doubles is always played as the final event. Teams are allowed to substitute players at the end of each game, and unlike traditional badminton, coaching is allowed during play. For the Indiana University team, the key match was their first round encounter with the University of Chicago. It was a seesaw battle: Indiana won both of the women's doubles games, and Chicago won both of the men's doubles points. With the score tied at 2-2, Indiana won the first women's singles game, and Chicago countered by winning the first men's singles game. Each team then returned the favor: Chicago won the second women's singles game, and Indiana won the second men's singles game. At 4-4, the final event was mixed doubles, and one game would determine the team winner. Indiana took an early lead in the mixed doubles and never looked back, taking the game 17-8 for a 5-4 team victory. Indiana then defeated Eastern Illinois University
8-1 and Michigan State 6-3 for the regional title. Chicago defeated
Michigan State 7-2 and Eastern Illinois 9-0 for a second place finish.
